Wanted: an opposition

Published: 16 April, 2010

• THE three potential parties of government (Conservative, Labour and Lib Dems) are agreed that deep cuts in government spending will be necessary to fill the black hole caused by the financial crisis.
None of these parties is telling the people where exactly it believes the cuts should take place. That would be too unpopular.
None of the main parties wants to accept the unpopularity which would come from applying Treasury plans on its own. A coalition government of the three main parties is therefore likely.
It will be pointed out that 80 to 90 per cent of those who voted put their crosses against the names of main-party candidates.
The Green Party, UKIP and the BNP will accept this situation. Where is the organised opposition going to come from?
