Time for an inquiry into role of prison staff
Published: 22 April, 2010
• I WELL remember some time ago reading in the New Journal of the plight of Ryan St George, the prisoner left brain-damaged after a fall in his prison cell.
Now the case has reached a conclusion, I trust that following on from the general election, parliament will hold a public inquiry into the action of staff at Brixton Prison.
The £4.7million award clearly reflects a number of questions to be asked of the Prison Service.
Why was someone with epilepsy not given a lower berth in a cell?
Why was the ambulance delayed in entering the prison?
Why was Ryan given a prison sentence for what the New Journal describes as “the minor offence of stealing batteries from a shop”?
