Promises, promises

Published: 30 April, 2010

• WHAT are we to make of all the promises flying about as the local elections draw nearer? In 2007, when Islington approved the building of Bridge School in Carleton Road, Holloway, the council sent a letter to residents saying they would be able to use the school’s new swimming pool.
I recently rang the Town Hall to inquire about this promise but no one knew anything about it. I asked one of my Lib Dem councillors to make inquiries. She was told the planning department had “lost the paperwork”.
If the council is so evasive about past promises, how far can we trust its promises for the future? Is it any wonder voters are sceptical about local government?
