Political climate

Published: 22 April, 2010

• A 200-strong enthusiastic crowd turned out for the first Hampstead & Kilburn Green hustings that took place last Wednesday.
It was jointly organised by Camden Friends of the Earth, Camden Cyclists, Transition Belsize and Camden Greenpeace, in the guise of Ask the Climate Question.
All candidates attended, although Glenda Jackson had something more important to attend to just 45 minutes after discussion had begun. Perhaps she didn’t want to expose her unwelcome views on the need to build a third runway at Heathrow.
All parties, apart from UKIP, regarded climate change to be an issue requiring urgent and significant attention. There was consensus that London needs greater legal protection for cyclists, and community action to cut pollution.
The candidates have realised that being committed to averting catastrophic climate change is a vote winner but we need to keep banging the drum to make sure it stays that way.
There were further questions that there wasn’t time to address.
These have been emailed to candidates and we look forward to hearing their responses.
