Letters to the Editor - Morality and manifestos
Published: 8 April, 2010
• HAVING enjoyed the Easter funfair on Hampstead Heath, with two more to follow, as in past years, no threat to them is perceived – yet, the Labour Party launches its election campaign with the slogan “A Future Fair for All”.
What can it mean, except that inanity reigns there.
Now that the election date is confirmed, these columns will be full of stuff from party hacks of all hues.
Apart from longevity in office, the Labour Party is perceived to be burdened by the aftermath of the invasion of Iraq in 2003, despite those who marched in protest (and were ignored).
Some would refer the leaders then to the war crimes tribunal, for trial.
Locally there is the scandal of the refusal of government to provide funds for refurbishment of council housing, leading to the Liberal Democrat-Tory coalition in Camden to sell off property as a fund-raiser.
There were repeated promises that a “third way”, would have been found to fund it. It was not.
In the two elections following the 2003 Iraq invasion, people voted Labour again. Perhaps this time they will examine their conscience, and ignore the occasional sops, such as winter fuel allowance for the elderly.
Moral standards matter. To inflict death and destruction on millions in the Middle East is immoral.
It was done in our name, in our elective dictatorship.
