Letters to the Editor - Democracy? I’m not allowed to display election posters
Published: 22 April, 2010
• I RECEIVED as a member of Camden Federation of Private Tenants a leaflet last week informing me that an opportunity was available for tenants of all tenures to find out what all the political parties in Camden will be doing to address the wide variety of housing needs in the borough, and I was asked to spread the word.
I am nearing my 79th birthday and decided that the best way to do this would be to put the notice in the corner of my window.
As a result I have received a telephone message from my temporary house manager who has been instructed by two committee members of the company that owns the freehold of my block to remove it because it is not allowed.
After completing my National Service I obtained work in London and purchased the remains of a seven-year lease by paying what then was known as key money.
That was 57 years ago.
I have never been able to buy the freehold of my flat and consequently I have been paying rent ever since to various landlords, the current one for more than 20 years.
Now those tenants who were fortunate enough to buy their freeholds are able to tell me what I can or cannot do.
Can this be what my father and his three brothers (who volunteered and fought in 1914-18) and my late brother and myself (who served their country when called upon) deserve?
I despair.
