Let’s hope general election gives turnout a big boost

Published: 30 April, 2010

• WITH the council election only days away, one wonders if there is voting apathy and whether the proportion of voters will increase.
In Clerkenwell, where Labour has a tireless action team, the turnout in 2006 was a mere 2,422 out of an electorate of 7,732 – a mere 31 per cent.
Many of those entitled to vote in Islington South will be council tenants who feel somehow they have been overlooked by politicians.
Will voter apathy return an incumbent Lib Dem administration?
Certainly, there should be a larger turnout as the poll coincides with a general election. One hopes the turnout will indicate an increase of interest in political activity.
