I think that I shall never see

• WHILE looking out of my window on beautiful (leafy?) Lady Margaret Road, I was inspired to write about the once-magnificent London plane tree I have lived beside for 18 years:

Oh my poor amputees,
You don’t look like trees
No flora or fauna,
No birds no bees,
My poor, poor sad amputees
They came with evil machines,
That cut your limbs with ease,
Now you stand disfigured and still,
Not a leaf to blow,
Nor a branch to bend
Oh my poor, sad ampuTREES
