BT Tower advertising blights the night sky

Published: 2 April 2010

AM I alone in finding the BT Tower’s new LED advertising banner irritating?
I live several miles away in Hackney and the view west from my local authority tower block at night has become marred by the tower’s lurid tumescence.
The tower’s bright red and blue is far too bright. It blights the night sky!
It seems that BT got one over on Camden Council and its planners. A BT press release boasts that the “screen is so luminous it can be seen from space at full brightness”.

But in its application for planning permission, granted in December, BT said the LED banner would “not cause significant change to the appearance of the building from ground level in long or short views”.
Surely, both statements cannot be true?
Camden Council officers have kindly responded to my complaint.

One said that Camden, like most local planning authorities, was still getting to grips with light pollution standards applied to advertisements. Another said that officers could only respond to complaints about light pollution where it prevented residents from sleeping.
My concerns from Hackney clearly don’t count. So, please, local residents, if you do find the BT advert too bright, will you make the case for it to be dimmed?
