Back shops

Published: 15 April, 2010

• I WRITE to protest at this hypocritical council towards community shopping.
This is shown by the way that the shops from 2 to 24 Crowndale Road, in a deprived ward, are facing enormous rent increases and unified business rates increases. To make matters worse they have now been told by Camden that they cannot park their vehicles in the yard behind their shops.
One minute the Lib Dem/Tory coalition talk glibly about how they support local shopping with large notices everywhere asking us to love our shops and then at the same time shoving large rent increases up the shopkeepers’ noses.
A year or so ago passed the council passed an all-party motion supporting the Sustainabilty Act then going through parliament which sought greater support from local authorities etc for community shops. Then this! If the Crowndale Road shops close down, as they might, then I can see them being sold off for private flats.
Camden Council, support your local shops and not destroy them!
And bring back our Crowndale Road post office.
