Arch will spoil views

Published: 9 April, 2010

• I SHOULD like to endorse the reported comments of Councillor Martin Klute about the proposed “arch” over Finsbury Square – that the square gardens should on the contrary be a “quiet, peaceful place” (Whatever happened to square’s arch? March 26).
This looks like yet another attempt to develop the limited green space in the borough. Are the two deplorable arches – in fact, advertisement hoardings – just up the road at the Old Street roundabout not enough?
Any arch of the kind illustrated will interfere with views of the major works of Commercial Classicism around Finsbury Square, such as Triton Court, with its tower, and Citygate House, quite apart from the detrimental effect on the green space itself. I am very glad to hear that Councillor Ruth Polling is reviewing this six-year-old project.
