Why not demolish that horrible old Town Hall?
• CAN I be alone in regarding Camden’s Grade II-listed Old Town Hall building on Judd Street as an outmoded dump?
The gloomy, acoustically flawed Council Chamber and the pretentious and uncomfortable white (Carrara?) marble grand staircase that leads deviously into a maze of incoherent timbered rooms symbolise absence of hope – sell it as an empty site along with the Annexe.
Make it an empty site by recycling the better bits of the fabric to whomsoever would buy it – even if it is just an architectural salvage firm.
Before it is demolished it could serve as a film set for the next Kafka epic.
I have no doubt that the character of the Old Town Hall
is an obstacle to a healthy democratic community evolving to include more younger councillors.
Far from Councillor Ralph Scott (Letters, December 17) being rash in his ambitions for redevelopment, he is too coy.
Let Camden seek demolition consent for the Old Town Hall as soon as possible.
Just because it is Grade II-listed does not grant it immunity from change – it simply means full justification for change has to be advanced.
I’d wager the majority of Camden residents would not miss it. It beggars belief it being a place for nuptials; it would make a better funeral home.
