THE brutal death of an Iraqi man killed while in the custody of British servicemen will be probed at the Tricycle Theatre, Kilburn, just weeks before an independent report into the scandal is published.
Evidence on the treatment of detainees in Iraq and the death of Baha Mousa will be used verbatim in the public inquiry-style production.
Nicolas Kent, the theatre’s artistic director, said: “Of all the public inquiries I can think of, this is the least reported.”
The text has been edited by Guardian journalist Richard Norton Taylor who has collaborated on a series of “verbatim plays” with Mr Kent at the Tricycle.
The duo are renowned for turning dense scripts from public inquiries into watchable drama. The Tricycle has staged public inquiries into Stephen Lawrence, Bloody Sunday and Guantanamo among others.
Baha Mousa was among 10 people arrested as suspected insurgents in Basra on September 14, 2003. Two days later he was dead from asphyxiation. A post-mortem recorded at least 93 injuries to his body.
• Tactical Questioning: Scenes from the Baha Mousa Inquiry runs from June 2 until July 2.
