ALAN Titchmarsh’s famously green fingers were busy planting an elm tree in Bolsover Street as part of a tree planting initiative on Friday.
The acclaimed gardener and novelist was in Marylebone to welcome the arrival of 48 elms as part of the “greening” of the neighbourhood.
He said: “One can’t underestimate the importance of being surrounded by trees. It’s just so uplifting and such a marvel to see the young ones coming through. I can’t tell you how excited this initiative makes me.”
Westminster Tree Trust and the W1W Tree Planting Initiative have teamed up to fund the project.
Paul Akers, head of trees at Westminster Council, said: “We’ve been planting trees for 40 years and have a long list of requests. It’s like a big jigsaw puzzle we’re trying to add to piece by piece to improve the quality of life in a stressful city.”
