NEW members, please!
That’s the plea from Parliament Hill Bowling Club, based on Parliament Hill Fields, who are facing up to a season of sharing their hallowed, 100-year-old green with a croquet club this summer.
They have been told by Hampstead Heath managers the City of London that the annual £30,000 cost of keeping their green in tip-top condition cannot be justified as they only have around 25 members.
The club’s vice-president Richard Caylor said: “This is a wonderful and relaxing sport and a great way to spend an afternoon, but we need new members.”
He added that the £100 membership and playing fees demanded by the City could often not be paid up front – and this put people off.
Nearby Mansfield Bowling Club, in Croftdown Road, are also looking for new members to help boost their coffers.
