LABOUR’S Shadow Minister for Work and Pensions Karen Buck MP will be speaking at a public meeting tomorrow (Saturday).
Other speakers will include local MPs Jeremy Corbyn and Emily Thornberry, while Islington Council Leader Catherine West will describe efforts being made to protect the voluntary sector and advice services from Government cuts.
There will also be speakers from Islington Law Centre and Islington People’s Rights, who offer legal advice and help with benefits and debt.
Ms Buck said: “As a Shadow Minister I am well aware that the changes in benefits, combined with a severe shortage of affordable housing, will make life in the inner city hard for many families.
“We shall continue to press for more and better housing provision, for better regulation of the private sector, and for a benefits system that offers life chances to all.”
Mr Corbyn said that Islington is blessed with strong communities where people help one another out in hard times.
He added: “The cuts will hurt local women and families but I am confident that we shall all come through the worst.”
The meeting is being held at the Andover community centre, off Seven Sisters Road, at 2pm.
