YOUNG people this week came face to face with the borough’s most senior police officer to discuss policing in the south of the borough.
Chief Superintendent John Sutherland took questions from the King’s Cross/Brunswick Youth Group during a visit to Holborn police station. The group, set up 15 years ago, uses football to ease tensions in the area.
And members, aged 18-24, will take on a team from Camden police later this month in a charity tournament at Coram’s Fields.
Funds raised will be donated to a Bangladeshi school and orphanage, group members of the centre will visit in May. Tuesday’s discussions ranged from the problem of stereotyping young people to the police’s right to “stop and search”.
Chief Supt Sutherland spoke of the “great potential” of the group and the generation they represent.
He offered support for future community projects, stressing that providing opportunities for young people and giving them a sense of belonging would help to make the borough safer.
