Praise for workers who kept roads gritted
THE Town Hall hit back this week at claims that it had done little to grit icy roads and pavements during the cold snap.
Lib Dem environment chief Greg Foxsmith accused Labour councillor Gary Doolan of “scaremongering” in an interview with the Tribune last week.
Cllr Foxsmith said: “The council’s employees made extraordinary efforts to keep services running. They have been working incredibly hard in cold and sometimes treacherous conditions. All credit to them.”
Islington had followed a priority system for gritting roads, he added. Cllr Foxsmith said: “All our street sweepers were redeployed to grit pathways and were doing so on a daily basis. The 300 on-street grit bins have also been kept topped up.”
Between Tuesday and Friday of last week Cllr Foxsmith said more than 140 tonnes of grit were spread on Islington streets and pavements.
