‘Curb that Christmas debt’ alert from Christians Against Poverty

A WARNING against Christmas spending sprees was issued this week by a new debt service launched in Islington.

A debt counsellor from Christians Against Poverty (CAP) said: “These are difficult times and the temptation is to say: ‘At least we’ll have a great Christmas’.”

But if that is funded by credit it can lead to poverty, mental ill health, homelessness and even suicide, warned CAP’s Nicola Vimalanathan.

She said: “Half of those with out-of-control debt have taken out a loan to cover the cost of the festive season.”

CAP has set up a debt advice service covering Islington and Camden, in conjunction with the Revelation Church.

Counsellors will visit people – not just Christians – to give free debt advice. To contact CAP, call 0800 328 0006.
