THE Royal Free has been named “Large Trust of the Year” in the annual hospital ratings.

The 2010 Dr Foster Hospital Guide singled out the Hampstead trust as the best big NHS hospital in the country after it maintained one of the lowest mortality rates in the country despite its “complex caseload”.

Hospital chief executive David Sloman said: “This achievement is down to the efforts of our workforce who aim to offer the best clinical care, the best patients experience and who pioneer new and effective healthcare approaches.”

University College London Hospital in Euston and the Whittington in Highgate, were also praised for having some of the lowest death rates in the country.
