Lecturer wins Royal Mint coin award - New 50p Olympic design set for next year

A LECTURER will see his design printed on legal tender next year to celebrate the London 2012 Olympics.
Pravin Dewdhory, a part-time tutor for the BTEC National Diploma art and design programme at City and Westminster College in Paddington, is among the winners of a national competition organised by Royal Mint to find sporty images for new 50p coins.
He said he had been paying close attention to the development of the Olympic site and that his design, which shows a rifle shooter and an exploding clay object, was inspired by the 2012 logo. Mr Dewdhory said: “I haven’t entered a design competition for years, but I enjoyed the creative challenge of taking the elements of the logo and turning them into something else for such a small-scale and everyday object.
“It was also great to enter such an inclusive competition and feel I was playing my own small part in the build-up to London 2012.”
The competition received 30,000 entries and Mr Dewdhory’s coin is one of 29 winning 50p designs, each marking different Olympic sports.
