REMEMBRANCE Day services took place across Westminster yesterday (Thursday) to honour the sacrifices made by the nation’s servicemen and women.
Hundreds of ex-soldiers as well as families of those serving in the army gathered at Westminster Abbey, while at Trafalgar Square girl band The Saturdays – who have been promoting this year’s Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal – serenaded the crowd, which included children from nearby schools.
There were other, less high-profile events elsewhere in the borough, including a wreath-laying service at Baker Street Station beside the recently restored memorial for railwaymen who died in the First World War. At the Animals In War memorial off Park Lane, campaigner Peter Tatchell was the guest speaker. He wore a purple poppy, which was introduced five years ago by charity Animal Aid to commemorate animals’ suffering during wartime.
