ACTRESS Barbara Windsor, helped plant a tree in Marylebone yesterday (Thursday) to celebrate a programme aimed at making central London leafier.

The national treasure, who starred in the Carry On films and played Peggy Mitchell in EastEnders, lives in Marylebone and rolled up her sleeves to dig a hole for a Chanticleer pear tree – one of scores of plants that have been installed in some of Westminster’s busiest areas to improve air quality.

Ms Windsor said: “As a local resident and proud Londoner I’m delighted to be showing my support for this scheme.

“London is a magnificent city and it’s great to see a project that encourages people to take pride in their neighbourhood. This has given us an opportunity to make a real difference to the place in which we live.”

The scheme is a joint venture by Westminster City Council, Westminster Tree Trust, and the W1W Tree Planting Initiative.
