Mystery over Talacre Sports Centre management

THE company tipped to take over Talacre Sports Centre from Camden Council is being as tight-lipped as Town Hall officers about the possible transfer.
The New Journal revealed last week how the popular facility in Kentish Town – famously home to one of the country’s best children’s gym classes – faces uncertainty over who will manage it in the future.
When New Journal reporters asked the council’s press office whether the council would continue to run the centre, staff declined to give a “yes” or a “no”, instead choosing to send issue a rambling response about the economic climate and cuts facing services.
This week we asked Greenwich Leisure Limited (GLL), which already runs other leisure services once run by the council including the Oasis swimming pool in Holborn, whether it was interested in Talacre.
And just like last week, a cagey response came back which did not indicate which direction the matter will take.
Asked whether the New Journal could be updated on GLL’s potential interest in Talacre, a spokeswoman for the company emailed a statement which did not refer to the centre by name.
It said: “GLL is a charitable social enterprise and we work in partnership with Camden Council to deliver services at a number of leisure centres in the borough. We recognise the current financial challenges the borough faces and will be working closely with the council to ensure Camden continues to deliver high-quality leisure services to local communities.”
