SCHOOLCHILDREN from Islington showed that you don’t have to be a world-class athlete to be a torch bearer for the Olympic spirit – you only have to do a bit more walking.
Pupils from Copenhagen Primary School carried the 1948 Olympic Torch in a relay organised as part of London’s Big WoW event.
Big WoW – or “walk once a week” – is a project to encourage children to walk to school, organised by the charity Living Streets and inspired by London’s successful bid for the 2012 Olympics.
The charity staged a round London children’s relay to publicise the cause.
The centrepiece of the walk was the 1948 Torch – which dates from the last time London staged the Olympics.
Pupils from the school in Treaty Street, Islington collected the sporting artifact from Camden children, walked along Regents Canal, and passed it to the neighbours on the other side from Hackney.
