A SUCCESSFUL lawyer killed himself by jumping in front of a train just two days after returning from his honeymoon, an inquest heard yesterday (Wednesday).

Robert Worrall, 34, of Church Row, Hampstead, suffered fatal injuries at Oxford Circus Tube station in July.

The inquest at Westminster Coroner’s Court in Victoria heard how Mr Worrall – a Cambridge graduate who worked for the major City law firm Linklaters – had married just three months earlier. He had no known history of depression

Asked by assistant deputy coroner Dr William Dolman whether Mr Worrall had been seeing a psychotherapist, his wife Anna Worrall told the court: “Not since we were together.”

Dr Dolman asked if he had attempted to take his life before or had said anything before the event that had worried her, to which she replied “no”.

In a statement submitted to the coroner, a witness described how there had been “nothing unusual” about Mr Worrall’s appearance on the platform just before he jumped onto the tracks.

The inquest heard that Mr Worrall had been treated in hospital following a drug overdose in 1998.

Dr Dolman said: “It is quite clear that Mr Worrall deliberately jumped into the path of the train.

“He was on his own and wasn’t pushed.”

Recording a verdict of suicide, Dr Dolman said a note had been found at Mr Worrall’s home in which he had written that he intended to kill himself.

In tributes left by friends and colleagues in a comment forum on the website of The Lawyer magazine, Mr Worrall was described as a “young and promising talent”.

One post reads: “Very very sad indeed.

“My thoughts are with this family and wife.

“A very cruel act of fate.”
