Fly-tippers Michael Briggs and Anthony Gustave jailed over tyre dump

PERSISTENT fly-tippers who were twice let off prison were finally locked up after they were caught red-handed for a third time.

Michael Briggs and Anthony Gustave received Asbos last year for dumping tyres and three-month suspended sentences for the same offence in August.

But three weeks later, Islington Council inspectors caught them again – in a van full of used tyres.

They were responsible for helping to build a huge pile of 3,000 dumped tyres at private land in York Way, King’s Cross.

A bogus sign was put up outside the site to make it look like a legitimate tyre fitters rather than an illegal dump.

The owner, Network Rail, had to pay £11,000 to get rid of the tyres.

Briggs, 32, from Hackney, and Gustave, 30, from Bethnal Green, were each jailed for five months at Blackfriars Crown Court last week.

Labour environment chief Councillor Paul Smith said: “Fly-tipping is selfish and costs taxpayers money to clean up. And we won’t put up with it.”
