THE Angel has been voted London’s best town centre by environmental campaign London in Bloom, which describes it as “a credit to Islington”.
The judges’ verdict has been applauded by Christine Lovett, director of Angel AIM, whose range of initiatives delivered in collaboration with businesses is credited with improving the area.
On receiving the award, Ms Lovett said: “This summer’s eye-catching flowers, unique shops, tidier streets, sustainable planting and watering by local people are just the tip of the iceberg of what the Angel has to offer.
“Being voted London’s top town centre is impressive – and the best recognition of the pride local businesses have in the Angel and the way we have worked together to brighten it up.”
Over the past four years Angel AIM has helped establish a free recycling service, a police team responsive to town centre crime such as shoplifting and mugging, regular and targeted street cleaning and an excellent working relationship between businesses. Companies have funded the colourful array of flowers.
London in Bloom judges looked for high standards of cleanliness, evidence of good conservation practices and, most importantly, a strong sense of community with everyone getting involved.
“From the market to the diverse range of shops, streets, open spaces and community areas, the Angel is a credit to the town centre and Islington,” was their verdict, awarding the area their highest silver gilt accolade over other London town centres.
Angel AIM has attracted sustainability grants to benefit the area and engaged businesses in supporting a greener town centre.
