POLICE have issued a new appeal for information about the murder of a young father outside an Old Street pub 12 years ago.
Peter Hennessy, 22, was stabbed at the Duke of Wellington pub, in Lever Street, Finsbury, in August 1998. His son was just nine months old at the time.
Although a £10,000 reward was offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for his death, no one has ever been charged.
The case has been revived following a routine re-examination carried out by the Murder Review Group.
Detective Chief Inspector Jackie Sebire, from the Homicide and Serious Crime Command, is hoping a new appeal might shake up some memories or stir someone’s conscience.
Police say there were a lot of people around the murder scene at the time.
DCI Sebire said: “Peter’s death had a devastating and lasting effect on his family and friends.
“We have never given up on the case and hope an anniversary appeal might encourage someone to come forward with information that might help us trace Peter’s killers.”
The stabbing occurred after an argument inside the pub, since closed, between Mr Hennessy, his brother Mark and some customers.
The brothers were asked to leave. They did so but returned shortly afterwards, at about 10pm.
Mr Hennessy was stabbed during a fight which broke out when the brothers clashed with pub customers in the street outside the Duke of Wellington.
He received a fatal stab wound to the stomach and was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
His brother suffered a broken jaw and cuts and was also treated at hospital.
Six men were arrested in the month that followed the murder, but they were all released and no further action was taken.
