A PLAQUE is set to be unveiled for the founder of Islington’s flagship Sobell Centre which narrowly survived demolition just last year.
The event next Tuesday will honour businessman and philanthropist Sir Michael Sobell, who donated £1million towards the cost of the building in 1973.
It marks the end of years of uncertainty over the future of the Sobell.
The former Lib Dem council had wanted to replace it with a smaller version along with flats before a massive public backlash and a change in political control when Labour took over in May last year. The Sobell is now set to be refurbished at a cost of £1.4m.
