Self-service machines are set to be rolled out across Westminster’s libraries
COUNCIL chiefs have signed off proposals to spend almost £200,000 on 11 machines to be installed at the six remaining libraries that used “old-fashioned” counters, including Maida Vale, Mayfair, Queen’s Park, Pimlico, St James’s and Paddington Children’s Library.
The move is part of an overhaul of the library service, which already has 18 machines up and running, accounting for 90 per cent of transactions.
The council has given assurances that extending the machines to all its library buildings will not result in any staff cuts.
Councillor Steve Summers, Westminster Council’s cabinet for community services, said: “The rollout of self-service machines at our libraries has been very successful and welcomed by our residents and customers.
“Librarians now have more opportunities to get out from behind the counter and do what they are best at – helping, directing and informing people to get the most out of their library.
“This is more rewarding for staff and better meets the needs of local people.”
