a group of young people from Gospel Oak have been on a unique journey to rediscover their surroundings through different types of media

THE week-long project, entitled The Chemical and Capricious, was aimed at challenging young people to use multi-media to explore their own perceptions of where they live.

Using photography and film, the eight youngsters from the Gospel Oak Youth Club looked at stereotypes and what it’s like to be young in their community.

They exhibited their work at the Maitland Park Tenants Hall, in Maitland Park Villas, on Friday.

Fay Govey, 15, who allowed herself to be filmed as she transformed her face with make-up, said: “The video is meant to show how young people are embarrassed to go out without looking their best. They feel they have to impress everybody.”

The group are now preparing to share their work with other young people from across the country during a residential trip to Wiltshire in October.

Gospel Oak youth worker Emelye Rennards said: “The project has brought the group a lot closer together in terms of team building and relationships. I think they’ve learned to express themselves better.”
