FORMER Islington Mayor Anna Berent has raised a total of £28,000 for two local charities it was revealed this week.
Anna, 82, who stood down as a Lib Dem councillor at the Town Hall elections, campaigned for donations for The Medical Foundation for the Victims of Torture in Finsbury Park, and Room2Heal who support asylum seekers.
An event to celebrate the achievement is planned to be held at Culpeper Gardens.
“I chose The Medical Foundation because the deliberate infliction of pain for political or other reasons on other people is just the most disgusting thing,” Anna said. “Room2 Heal do a wonderful job supporting asylum seekers who have been through desperate times in their own countries. They are often perceived as scroungers. The trouble is they are not allowed to work.”
Jasvir Kaur, marketing director of The Medical Foundation for the Care of Victims of Torture said: “This significant donation will make a very real impact upon the lives of torture survivors whom we support at our treatment centres, the largest of which is here in Islington.” A spokesman for Room2Heal said they were very grateful for the donation.
