It’s time for real debate

Published: 30 July, 2010

• THIS Tuesday I went to my first council meeting, feeling that in such a difficult time we need to come together, regardless of political persuasion.

I was anticipating this meeting to be emotionally charged, given the motion to implement £8million of cuts but nothing prepared me for the circus that was the budget cut debate.

With such difficult decisions, livelihoods at stake and much-needed services at risk, I was incredibly disappointed with councillors using this as an opportunity for a public slanging match, not to mention the continued disruption from the public gallery.

I am in no doubt that we all care deeply about the effect these decisions will have.

However, now is the time for real debate and solutions to the problems facing our community, not platforms for politicians’ careers.

No wonder you have no councillors any more...

"THIS Tuesday I went to my first council meeting"

Bit like Katy Dawson then. Who the voters threw out at the last election taking you from one to zero. Not exactly representative of borough opinion then are you?
