THIS is the jaw-dropping new look inside the Marshall Street Baths where rubble has been replaced by two beautifully refurbished swimming pools.

It is hoped that the celebrated Art Deco baths in Soho will re-open on July 26, following a £25million refit, and this sneak preview shows what swimmers can expect behind its famous ornate façade in Marshall Street.

In 1997, the baths were forced to close after the building’s decaying roof and smashed marble tiles became a major safety hazard.

But after a campaign by swimmers and Soho residents and extensive coverage in the West End Extra, the 80-year-old structure has been restored to its former glory. It was budgeted for before the recession struck local government finances.

Councillor Steve Summers, head of Westminster’s leisure department, said: “The development of this iconic site is an excellent example of how the private and public sector can work together to fund projects of incredible importance to benefit local people.

“We all know the economic situation is tough and will get even tougher as public spending continues to be squeezed, but we remain committed to providing a high standard of local services for our citizens.

“This exciting redevelopment demonstrates our continued commitment to ensuring all our residents have access to high-quality, state-of-the-art and affordable sport and leisure facilities right on their doorsteps.”

There has been a baths on the site since 1850. They will form part of a bigger leisure centre, which will include a new gym, sauna and studio space. More than 600 people have already signed up for membership.
