POLICE have praised a street sweeper who chased off a gang as they tried to mug a woman in Belgravia.
Mosaad Abdalla, 42, sprang into action when he saw two men jump out of a car, and try to snatch the victim’s handbag and necklace outside a coffee shop.
They beat a hasty retreat when he ran at them with his broom, leaving the lady startled but unhurt.
Mr Abdalla, who works for the council’s contractors Veolia Environmental Services, said “The whole thing was like something from a movie. I wasn’t scared, I didn’t even think about it. Where I am from in Egypt people always want to help if there is some trouble.”
PC David Pullan said: “We were very lucky that Mosaad was there on this occasion. With the weather getting warmer, jewellery is more likely to be on show and that’s when people can become targets.”
