ACTORS from the Tower Theatre group have said they are delighted that they will soon be realising their dream of a new £7million purpose-built performance venue.

The group, whose patrons include Sir Michael Gambon and Zoe Wannamaker, were performing scenes from Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice and Sonnets at the Canonbury Society annual garden party on Sunday.

Guests at the party in Alwyne Road, close to Canonbury Tower – where the company were based for 50 years before being forced to move because of a legal dispute eight years ago – heard that the new theatre will be built on the site of James Burbage’s purpose-built Elizabethan playhouse in 1576.

Brilliant!

I've missed the Tower Theatre, after moving to Highbury in 1974. I'd like to know more about how the troop succeeded after so many setbacks.

What an inspiration to those trying to keep up the spirit of this lovely place.
