Martin Davies, leader of Conservatives, dies suddenly at home

Saturday June 12, 2010

By RICHARD OSLEY

ONE of the most popular councillors at the Town Hall has died suddenly, leaving Camden's politicians in shock.

Martin Davies, 45, died at his home in Hampstead yesterday (Friday). He had recently taken over as the leader of the Conservative group.

He was respected for seeing past political rivalries and working with councillors from all parties in 12 years at the Town Hall. In the last four years he had led the way in improving care home provision for the elderly and had overseen plans to create two new start of the art homes for Camden's older people. After the change of power at the council last month, Labour's Pat Callaghan paid tribute to his work for four years as social services chief. Away from the Town Hall, he worked as the chief executive of Age Concern in Westminster. It is thought he suffered a heart attack.

Martin Davies: a much loved man

I am wrought with grief at the loss of our colleague and friend Martin Davies. This is a man who should not have died so young and that he did so unexpectedly, is both bewildering and and tragic.

I never heard Martin speak badly of other people or people speak badly of him. In the world of politics he was a very rare type of person, one who was without artifice and whose kindess was genuine. Camden is a poorer place for having lost such a wonderful human being and my life is so much the richer for having known him.

My deepest sympathies go out to Martin’s partner, his family and close friends. I hope they will find comfort in the good life that was lived by Martin and the love in which he was held by all those who knew him and now mourn him.

Im sure tributes from all partys and residents will come fast and furious over the next few days. I am devasted by whats happened, martin was not only our deputy leader when I was in office, he was like my own family, I socialised with martin and his dear partner richard on many occasions. I was very proud of martin, he was a great support to councillors and he did so many great things in the council and made life so much better for all the elderly in camden, and will be missed dearly by every political party and truly a great loss for the conservatives. My heart and condolences go out to martins family and his lifelong partner richard, but I know the rest of us will take a long time to come to terms with this devastating news that he will no longer be in our lives. god bless you martin and rest in peace.
