EDUCATION journalist Fiona Millar joined the Mayor of Camden and school pupils for the 9th annual “litter blitz” on Hampstead Heath on Monday.
Pupils from Parliament Hill School, La Sainte Union and William Ellis mucked in to fill biodegradable bags with bottles and packaging plucked from fields using litter-picking “claws”.
Mayor of Camden Jonathan Simpson donned rubber gloves and collected rubbish alongside members of Heath Hands, a volunteer organisation that aims to preserve the special character of the open space.
Heath bosses the Corporation of London say that in a busy weekend over the summer, over seven tonnes of rubbish can be dumped on the Heath – the equivalent weight of two elephants.
