A Dog’s Nose and a Red Biddy
Ardizzone and Gorham provide a helpful glossary of terms for pub users. It acts as a looking-glass on fruity-sounding phrases that have long been lost in the bar room banter.
Ale In London pubs, ale stands for Mild Ale, which is the mildest sort of beer.
Cold Dog A term used to describe a sausage – because it does not include a roll, it's not a hot dog
Dog’s Nose - A name for an insidious drink composed of beer with a drop of gin.
Granny A facetious term for ‘old-and-mild’, used in the East End and the Docks.
Number One - The name given by breweries for their strongest ale.
Old - A different name for a pint from Burton.
Red Biddy - A drink made of cheap wine fortified with spirits. For its price it was extremely intoxicating and it had the quality (like bad potheen) of making its addicts fight.
Wallop - A name used by darts players for mild ale.
Wompo - A name for the best ale, used by the East End and docks.
