Feature: The Big Picture - Exhibition - Still Or Sparkling at Belgrave House from June 10-25
Published: 9 June, 2011
Set in the elegant surroundings of a beautiful Georgian town house in Belgrave Square, “Still Or Sparkling” is a secret gem, bringing together new and recent work by international artists and photographers.
In one of the hightlights of this exhibition from Gazelli Art House, Kyung Woo Han has created “Green House”, a surreal wonder of tables and chairs that appear to float in mid-air as if the room has been half-submerged in water. Visitors will be able to walk among the “floating” furniture in this Alice in Wonderland inspired swimming pool of distorted objects.
This is the third exhibition from Gazelli Art House – a contemporary art organisation dedicated to providing a new setting for the understanding and creation of art. Following “Fired Up” and “Down to Earth”, “Still Or Sparkling” continues the exploration of the classical elements. Water in all its mercurial beauty is the starting point for the artists as they examine the intuitive and emotional qualities associated with water and the special place it was believed to inhabit between air and earth in classical symbolism.
Other artists include Henry Krokatsis, whose sculptures conjure up a magical and spiritual quality from reworked found objects such as glass, wax, lead and wood; Noguchi Rika’s ethereal new works use light to evoke dreams of flying and space travel; Mike Calway-Fagen’s installations are both humorous and quietly disturbing, and feature a taxidermied Alsation at rest on the flattened and skinned pelt of a wolf; and digital media artist Hyo Myoung Kim is showing new chromo-photographic works from his series of light and sound-sensitive digital works.
