Education Feature: Courses at Working Men’s College
Published: 19 September, 2011
WORKING Men’s College (WMC), in the heart of Camden, is bursting with exciting new classes with great accessibility.
Minutes from Camden Town and King’s Cross, on many bus routes, outside the congestion zone with free parking after 6.30pm and plenty of bars, cafés, restaurants and music venues nearby.
Art classes now include Botanical Drawing for those who love plants, gardening and natural forms and want a go at making their own illustrations, inspired by London botanical collections.
Stained Glass and Glass Art, the only class of its kind in north London echoes the work of Burne Jones, one of WMC’s early tutors with stained glass, kiln-formed glass, enamels, lustres, etching and sandblasted techniques.
Jewellery in a light filled dedicated studio offers work in metals, stones or silver clay.
The one year Fashion Foundation course, free for 18-year-olds, has places left for those keen to get into the fashion industry but without the right A-levels.
Industry expert tutors will help you choose the best specialism and create a strong portfolio to support your HE application.
2011 is the last chance to do a degree before the £9k fees kick in and most places are taken.
But WMC still has places on its foundation degree Professional Practice in Art & Design in Illustration, Communication Design and Fine Art.
For words and ideas check the new Languages and Humanities.
Languages, by tutors rated independently as “outstanding”, now include Brazilian Portuguese, German, Italian and Japanese.
The popular Creative Writing course is back and joined by Anthropology, History of Cinema and History of Art and Architecture. Or if you fancy something physical, try Zumba or Pilates.
A former WMC student remarked: “I really benefited from learning practical arts and business skills, and just loved being part of the college where visionary John Ruskin taught and Young British Artists Sarah Lucas and Gary Hume learned.”
