A full programme of jazz, blues and easy-listening music has some terrific musicians over the summer months at the enterprising Map Cafe arts venue in Kentish Town.
Indeed, with so many venues closed for the holidays, Map is one of the few music-making places in north London catering to its customers.
The programme gets under way on Thursday with stunning singer Zeeteah Massiah playing with a fine line-up comprising Reuben Fowler – trumpet; Rob Hughes – saxophone; Rick Laughlin – piano; Sophie Alloway – drums; and Paul Carmichael – bass.
Barbados-born, Zeeteah grew up in London after her family moved here when she was five.
Legend has it that she started singing almost on the day she was born and she’s barely stopped since.
Over the years she’s shared the stage with some of the world’s top musicians, including Michael Jackson, Robbie Williams, Tom Jones, Phil Collins, Johnny Hallyday, Simply Red and Mika.
“Music is like breathing – I couldn’t live without it,” she says. “We have no idea what the future will bring. So live each day as it it were your last and let tomorrow take of itself.”
Other singers include The Simians of Swing on July 12 featuring Welsh trumpeter Andy Davies, compere of the Wednesday jam session at Ronnie Scott’s and acclaimed young singer-songwriter Delee Debub on July 26.
The Map programme continues through August with singers Vandell Andrew along with groups including the Jules Faife Quartet, Vladimir Miller Quartet and Sound of Bluenote.
