Skrillex @ Koko

It’s hard to not revert to cliché when talking about Skrillex but the facts are unavoidable.
He looked like he was having as much fun as the crowd, and the sweaty mix of celebs and fans on the dance floor and in the wings were hanging on his every beat.
Skrillex is increasingly becoming a divisive character in music.
Is he too mainstream?
Is his music even dubstep?
Exactly how did someone quite so “rock” end up as the bold new voice of electro?
His set at Koko should have appeased most of his critics. During his energetic performance there were countless moments where he expertly gave the crowd exactly what we wanted, namely heavy beats and all of his hits, but he still managed to surprise us.
Dropping Fatman’s Scoop Be Faithful and then mixing into a dark, full-on dubstep remix of Kriss Kross’s Jump was just one of the unexpected highlights of a show that showcased his influences.
When I left Koko I felt like I’d been at the scene of something special – The first night of a world tour that’s set to gain Skrillex even more fans and broaden the appeal of his music, whatever name we give it.
