BEN Johnson is giving the Wigmore Hall lunch-time recital on Monday.

The young English tenor won the Kathleen Ferrier Award in 2008 and has been making a splash on the opera, oratorio and recital stage since then.

Just now, he’s winning enthusiastic plaudits for his singing the role of Nemorino in English National Opera’s stunning production of Donizetti’s The Elixir of Love at the Coliseum.

His sound and singing style is often described as being Italianate, more Luciano Pavorotti than Ian Bostridge – highly suited for Donizetti.

Monday’s lunchtime recital will provide a good opportunity to hear him tackling something completely different, Schubert’s Schwanengesang.

He will be accompanied by South African pianist, James Baillieu.
