A CRACKING programme has been put together by St George’s Bloomsbury for its new season starting this weekend.
Saturday evening’s opening concert given by the Buon Tempi Consort involves two large-scale Baroque pieces by Venetian composer Antonio Lottie for soli, choir and orchestra – both works that influenced Bach and Handel.
On Sunday afternoon, the newly formed Khoros choir of 40 young singers is singing excerpts from the Rachmaninov Vespers and works by Stravinsky and Tchaikovsky.
Next Tuesday evening, outstanding young soprano Siona Stockel is joining the award-winning all-girl Consortium5 recorder ensemble in a performance of Renaissance madrigals, dances and fantasies.
For Consortium5, the concert comes two days after its gig at The Forge, Camden Town.
• Lovers of spiritual, devotional and ecstatic music should not miss the third Transcender festival being hosted by the Barbican over the next week. It starts tomorrow (Friday) with some African grooves played by Justin Adams and Juldeh Camara, familiarly known as “JuJu,” and by Tuareg guitarist Omar “Bombino” Moctor. Highlight of the festival is Music from Around the Sufi World next Wednesday featuring Sain Sahoor, a spiritual minstrel from Pakistan.
• Two upcoming recitals by world class musicians are immensely appealing. Tomorrow (Friday) evening, Russian-born violinist Alina Ibraginova is playing late Debussy and Ravel at the Wigmore Hall and, next Thursday lunchtime at LSO St Luke’s, outstanding Georgian pianist Khatia Buniatishvili is playing Beethoven sonatas including The Tempest and Appassionata.
