Rock and Pop: Latest News > July 21
JOHN’S Children may have had a short-lived career but they packed it with the kind of showbiz adventures rockstar hopefuls dream of. Their records, while not noted for musical merit, have become collectors’ items. We only give a tiny glimpse of how John’s Children lived, I didn’t have room for the Brigitte Bardot story, the amp rows with half of the Who, or the tale of them being arrested in the south of France. For the full picture you’ll have to buy Andy Ellison’s book when he finishes it.
• Two former Record of the Week choices are in town – Warehouse Republic at Bar Solo (July 22) and Francis Neve at the Bull & Gate (July 27).
• Jump jump, jump, jump around...House of Pain are still going and the dancefloor may be creakily weary of their signature hit but students all over the country are calling for more. See them at Scala (July 28).
• Australian singer-songwriter Joel Sarakula is coming to the Wheelbarrow. Go find out why he’s unique (July 23, 12pm-4pm).
• Why make a glossy music video when a more authentic wobbly one will do? My Brazilian Neighbour, from album Live in Soho to be launched at Dover Street Wine Bar (July 25), is just that, reflecting The Red Stripe Band’s Soho roots, recording in a Soho flat while protesters outside smashed up banks and shops.
• East 17 play 02 Academy Islington on July 26 – will it be the full line-up or have they drafted in some new members?
• Somebody say Bagleys? Yes the 90s is officially retro and so a Bagleys reunion complete with DJ Ariel is legit. Reserve July 30, The Star of Kings, York Way, more details next week.
