A STRONG line-up of musicians has been assembled by Map Café for jazz enthusiasts patronising the boutique Kentish Town outlet over the next month.
Saxophonist/clarinettist Gilad Atzmon leading his own band is first up tomorrow (Friday). His live performances are said to be breathtaking and overwhelming. Over the years, he’s developed a cultural hybrid combining great bebop artistry reminiscent of John Coltrane with his Isreali roots, playing the music of the Middle East, North Africa and Eastern Europe.
Next Thursday the Map podium will be taken by Watford singer/songwriter Esta Daley and her new all-female band playing a mix of classic jazz and soul. She became a professional session singer at 23, going on to design and teach at London’s first Backing Course at the Islington Music Workshop.
Other Map bookings include singer/pianist Anoushka Lucas, July 15; pianist Michael Garrick playing with songstress Nette Robinson, July 23; and the Kevin Davy Quartet, July 29.
• Formidable Indian violinist Kala Ramnath is playing at St Luke’s, Old Street, next Thursday evening with Sanju Sahai, one of the finest and most sought after tabla players of his generation. She’ll also be playing with string players from the London Symphony Orchestra.
As a virtuoso of staging proportions, Kala has forged musical alliances with artists from around the world incorporating elements of jazz, flamenco and traditional African music into her traditional North Indian music. Her latest collaboration with 12 LSO string players involves a new piece by composer Max de Wardener.
