WHERE Do Bad Folks Go When They Die?” – those lyrics, from Lake of Fire, will always be associated with Kurt Cobain’s distinctive vocals from Nirvana’s 1993 MTV Unplugged show the year before his death. But who remembers it was actually a Meat Puppets song? They joined Nirvana as they covered two other Meat Puppets tracks, Oh Me and Plateau, during the momentous performance – once a well-worn album on my gaudy yellow discman but it’s been sadly neglected in recent years. But well before Meat Puppets won over the MTV generation, they had carved out their own reputation, hailed for their ability to blend punk with country and psychedelic rock, by the likes of Sonic Youth and Pavement. Meat Puppets play Relentless Garage on May 30.
