IF you’re ever in town during the day, don’t forget there are free lunchtime concerts at St Martin-in-the-Fields, Trafalgar Square, every Monday, Tuesday and Friday, starting at 1pm.
The concerts feature exceptional emerging talent from London and abroad performing in different series, Pianists of the World, New Music, Organ and so on.
The various lunchtime series work alongside a number of Britain’s top music colleges and speciality schools and there’s a strong emphasis on hosting performances by musicians from around the world.
You can catch some interesting young talent at the concerts. Last month, performers included up-and-coming recorder ensemble I Flautisti, dazzling young Russian pianist Yulia Chaplina and the Mediterranea Trio made up of Royal College of Music graduates.
There are some choice pickings over the next week, too.
On Friday May 27, young Japanese pianist Aisa Ijiri is playing a delightful programme of Debussy, Bach and Liszt. She’s regarded as a pianist of exceptional quality, sophisticated musicality and artistic integrity.
Bank holiday Monday lunchtime will have the Wu String Quartet playing Dvorak and Janacek.
Formed in 2002, the Wu is now established as a quartet playing with grace and style. Thirdly, next Tuesday, the lunchtime concert will be given over to the St Martin’s New Music Series.
Being performed will be new works for flute and clarinet, voice and piano and vocal ensemble by such composers as John Carmichael, Celia Harper and Julian Dawes.
